Arunachal Pradesh Motorcycle Expedition - Ride Through India’s Last Great Frontier

Arunachal Pradesh — India’s last great frontier. Wedged between Bhutan, China and Myanmar, this vast Himalayan state is a land of towering mountains, ancient cultures, remote valleys and roads that disappear deep into the wilderness.

This 10-day motorcycle expedition takes you beyond the familiar routes and into the heart of Arunachal Pradesh. Starting from Guwahati, ride through the scenic Kameng region and the mountain roads around Bomdila, Thembang and Dirang, before crossing the spectacular Sela Pass and reaching the high-altitude town of Tawang.

From here, the adventure gets even more remote. Explore Tawang Monastery, Madhuri Lake and Nuranang Falls, then ride towards the Indo-China border at Bum La Pass and the sacred Chumi Gyatsye Waterfalls. The return journey takes you through Sela and the beautiful Dirang and Sangti valleys before descending towards the forests of Nameri National Park and back to Guwahati.

With around 1,100 km of riding, a mix of tarmac and off-road terrain, high-altitude passes and remote mountain roads, this is a journey designed for riders who want to experience Arunachal beyond the tourist trail — raw, remote and best experienced on two wheels.

Good To Know: Notes

  • Minor resequencing of the above itinerary may be done only for safety, weather, road conditions or permit requirements

  • Border-area access on Day 6 and certain high-altitude stretches on Days 3, 4 and 6 depend on army / civil administration clearance and weather, and cannot be guaranteed.

  • Distances and riding times are approximate and may vary with road and traffic conditions. November nights in Tawang and above Sela are very cold; thermals, layers and windproof gear are essential.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Arunachal Pradesh Motorcycle Tour

1. Do I need a permit to travel to Arunachal Pradesh?
Yes. Indian tourists require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter Arunachal Pradesh. The permit is applicable to domestic visitors, and the state tourism department provides an online eILP process. Certain border-area destinations, including Bum La, require additional permission and access is subject to local and security clearances. Twisted Trails will assist with the required permits for the expedition.

2. How difficult is the Arunachal Pradesh motorcycle tour?
The expedition is rated Intermediate and covers approximately 1,100 km over 10 days, with around 90% tarmac and 10% off-road riding. The route includes high-altitude mountain roads, gravel sections and challenging terrain around Tawang and the border areas. Previous experience with long-distance motorcycle touring and basic off-road riding skills is recommended.

3. Will there be snow during the November Arunachal tour?
Snow is possible, particularly around Sela Pass and the higher-altitude areas near Tawang and Bum La. November is also a good period for clearer mountain views, although weather can change quickly at altitude. Road and pass conditions can vary, so the itinerary may be adjusted if required for safety.

4. How do we manage the high altitude on this motorcycle tour?
The itinerary is designed with gradual altitude gain, including overnight stops around Bomdila and Dirang before reaching Tawang. This helps riders acclimatize before heading to higher-altitude locations such as Sela Pass and Bum La. At high altitude, riders should stay hydrated, avoid overexertion and immediately report symptoms such as severe headache, dizziness or breathlessness to the tour leader. Tawang Tourism specifically recommends acclimatization before visiting the higher-altitude areas.

5. Can I join the tour without my own motorcycle?
Yes. You can join as a rider on a rental Royal Enfield Himalayan 411 or Himalayan 450, or travel as a pillion/SUV passenger. The brochure currently lists RE Himalayan 411 and 450 rental options, along with own-bike and pillion/SUV packages. A backup vehicle, experienced mechanic and tour leader are also included in the expedition.
